K-9 Coach Training Seminar

Does your dog bark or charge at new dogs it meets in public?

Does it bark at people when they approach or enter your house?

Is your dog reactive to objects like strollers or bikes?

Learn how to control these behaviors and much more at our next Atlanta Pet Rescue Dog Training Seminar with Amber Burckhalter.

Amber Burckhalter of K-9 Coach recently offered to provide a training seminar for Atlanta Pet Rescue volunteers. The seminar was so popular, we asked her to open it to our adopters and supporters as well, and lucky for us - she has agreed!

Amber is a Certified Master Trainer in canine obedience and behavior modification. She recieved her training at North State K-9 Academy, one of the nation's premiere pet obedience, behavior modification, and police K-9 training centers.

Precious Puppy Kisses!

Hi I am Jeffie! I am one of Dee Dee's puppies. I am about 12 weeks old. All four of my brothers have already been adopted, and I think I have been patient for long enough! I want a family of my own too! I weigh about seven pounds now and will likely reach 17-25 pounds when full grown. I am the most brave and outgoing of my litter, and I was always the first one to explore something new.

Don't get me wrong - all of my brothers and I have wonderful temperaments, but I am the most outgoing. They tell me that this is because I have been "well socialized", whatever that means. All I know is, I sure do love attention and anyone and everyone I meet. I will make a great addition to your family! Just give me a chance.

I am at the shelter and available for adoption all week long (except Sundays and Mondays).

Come meet me at or see me online at: www.atlantapetrescue.org. Atlanta Pet Rescue is open Tuesday – Friday 11am-3pm and Saturday 1pm-4pm. For more information about Atlanta Pet Rescue or how to adopt Jeffie or any of our 80+ dogs or cats, visit our web site.

A Letter from Igby (formerly Amos)

Dear friends at Atlanta Pet Rescue,

It's been a whirlwind since my adoption. I arrived in Cincinnati just in time for several weeks of freezing temps, ice and deep snow. My Cincinnati vet and my Atlanta vet decided that my activity should be limited until April to further allow my broken back to completely heal. So I recuperated with lots of TLC and visitors but no jumping or stairs.  What a

difference time can make in the healing process. I am jumping so high and running so fast that I  think my foster mom would get tears in her eyes. My posture is much improved and my tail is no longer hanging sideways. No one can even tell that I've ever been seriously injured.

I'm taking my mom to private obedience training for six weeks.  We start on Monday. Something about me coming on extremely strong when we see other people or other dogs during our walks. So my mom is going to learn how to walk me so we can both relax and enjoy the scenery, the neighbors, and the friendly dogs that right now I won't let near me. We're going to have a lot of fun in class together.

I wake up everyday with boundless energy and a smile on my face. My life is so good. I smile all the time (except when my mom or dad dares to leave the house). I am very happy. I found my forever family thanks to all of you.

Igby P.

A note to readers: When Igby first arrived at our shelter, we were hoping for a miracle. Igby had a broken back. We sent his x-rays to a specialist. Although he was in a lot of pain, he was still a sweet little boy and we were thrilled when he finally started showing signs of progress, due in large part from lots of extra TLC in his foster home. Eventually he was well enough to be adopted, and it seems he is making up for lost time with his new, adoring family! Way to go Igby!

Volunteer Spotlight

Meet APR volunteer Brett Rubin

Brett has been volunteering with Atlanta Pet Rescue for almost six years. This photo shows Brett (and Athena, the dobie) braving the cold temperatures when we used to have to hold mobile adoptions in the parking lot of Barking Hound Village on Cheshire Bridge Road, long before the days of our adoption facility on 14th Street.

Brett is not only a regular in the large dog pen on Saturdays, he is at every off-site event and fundraiser, always wearing his smile and asking what he can do to help.

When he is not helping out with fundraising or taking care of the dogs on Saturday adoptions, Brett is working hard for McKesson, which includes a lot of travel and overtime.

Thank goodness he manages to still find time in his busy schedule for Atlanta Pet Rescue! We don't know what we would do without you Brett!

New Online Resource Library

Atlanta Pet Rescue is happy to announce the launch of our new online resource library. We continually strive to serve our adopters, and the entire community, as an educational resource regarding a full array of companion animal issues. Our goal is to eliminate the crisis of pet overpopulation in our area, and we understand education is a crucial aspect of achieving this goal.

In our new online resource library you will find a collection of articles and links for your use.

Please email us if there is another topic you are seeking information on, so that we can continue to add to our resource library.
