A Look Ahead to 2007: A Note from the Pets of APR

Happy New Years!! A special new years greeting from all the dogs, cats, puppies and kittens at Atlanta Pet Rescue. We want to wish you a happy 2007 and thank you for your help in 2006. As we look ahead, we want to also let you - our loving guardian angels - know what we need to make our wonderful shelter an even better place to live and play in the new year.

We see a lot of faces come and go, and we know that you each want to do something to help. What most people do not realize is just how much money it takes to keep the shelter up and running. We may be cute, but we are not cheap! Did you know that our medical expenses were over $80,000 last year? And our food and housing cost another $90,000!

Besides just our normal operating expenses, we are also saving our pennies to buy our own permanent shelter one day soon. Right now we are renting, but our space is too small, and our lease will be up before we know it. The building and land are scheduled for “redevelopment”, which means we will have to move to a new home. We want to plan ahead to make sure Atlanta Pet Rescue has a future. We need a minimum of one acre of land and a larger building to accommodate and care for all of us, and space to grow in order to save even more deserving lives.

You can help us by sending a one-time donation or a monthly donation of $20 (or any amount) to Atlanta Pet Rescue. Not only will your donation help us stay warm and safe until we get adopted, but it will help ensure the future of Atlanta Pet Rescue for those of us yet to come. Help us get 2007 started right!

Thank you for getting involved and making a difference in our lives.

With all our hearts,
the dogs, cats, puppies and kittens of Atlanta Pet Rescue

Precious Pooch Prefers a Pampered Life

Hi there! I’m Libby. I am an adorable one year old Beagle/Corgi mix and I and weigh about 20 pounds.  I came from a place where dogs like me, as sweet as I am, have no chance of being adopted.  To make matters worse, I had an eye condition called Cherry Eye which is easily corrected with surgery, but which reduced my chance of finding a home even more so.

I have had the surgery to correct this condition and I am completely recovered. I am a healthy and happy girl. My favorite past time is playing with other dogs, especially my best friend Camilla, who came to Atlanta Pet Rescue the same day I did. We are inseparable! I also love and adore people and I am

the best cuddle-bug that you'll ever meet! I would do best in a home with another young dog that is looking for a constant playmate.

I am at the shelter and available for adoption weekdays and Saturdays. You can watch Camilla and I play for hours without stopping. We are good entertainment! Come meet me at or see me online at: www.atlantapetrescue.org.

Atlanta Pet Rescue is open Tuesday – Friday 11am-3pm and Saturday 1pm-4pm. For more information about Atlanta Pet Rescue or how to adopt Libby or any of our 80+ dogs or cats, visit our web site.

An Extreme Makeover for Atlanta Pet Rescue!

The feline residents of Atlanta Pet Rescue are proud to announce big changes for 2007! Recently, a foundation called New Leash on Life awarded Atlanta Pet Rescue a grant for the remodel and improvement of our cat room. Things are already underway thanks much to the hard work of the remodel committee head, Gigi Gould, and our director of feline care, Lyndel Gliedman (both volunteers)!

However, during the remodel process, our cats will have to be transferred into the care of foster homes until the construction is complete. So... we need cat foster homes desperately! If you have fostered in the past, or have ever considered fostering a cat or cats for Atlanta Pet Rescue, we need you now. Please click here to read more about how to foster. Until the remodel project is complete, cat adoptions will be held by appointment only.

Here are the exciting details of the remodel project:

*GOAL #1: In order to increase access to natural light for resident cats we will add a large window overlooking the front entry area into the shelter that is supplied with plenty of natural light via large storefront windows across the entire width of the room. In addition to this we will add an outdoor sanctuary for the cats accessible via a cat door. The outdoor sanctuary will allow them access to fresh air and daylight, and the cat door will allow for easy access back into the main resident area. The outdoor sanctuary will be located on the existing covered front patio at the shelter entrance.

*GOAL #2: In order to increase our cats’ visibility to potential adopters we will add an additional viewing window on the wall shared with our shelter entry area. This will allow for viewing of our cat residents by all visitors and guests as they enter our shelter facility.

*GOAL #3: In order to provide safer, cleaner housing for our cat residents we will replace the existing housing unit with a new “Queen Pen” Six-Unit model. This housing unit provides adequate capacity, safety and durability, and is easier keep clean and sanitary.

*GOAL #4: The following improvements will be made to the structural integrity of the room during the remodel project: The ceiling will be replaced with sheet rock instead of tile. The inside wall will be properly insulated and painted. The wall should be completely covered with wood framing, insulation and sheet rock. If we remove the door and replace it with a new door we can also take advantage of the small porch on the outside. We can add a safe, secure outdoor enclosure for the cats. It would expand the space available for our cats and would provide them with a much-needed activity area. The door would be glass on the upper portion so we can see the outdoor enclosure when the door is closed.

*GOAL #5: The cat residents will be provided with increased stimulation and an improved overall play environment with the addition of hand built ladders, cat-walks, climbing areas, scratching posts and seclusion/rest areas for stressed or shy cats or, as part of the overall remodel of the cat room.

We invite you to stop by and see our progress!
